Vietnam washout in August? -- Sightseeing

Hi everyone

Got a bit of a conundrum. Want to go away in August for 2-3 weeks. Vietnam/Laos was top of my list but I'm hearing varying reports about the weather. Lonely Planet says the violent rainy season can be a real spoiler, but friends are saying it's possible to enjoy it any time of year. Alternatively I could go to China but I'm a bit rusty on the solo travelling thing and am a bit intimidated. Vietnam would be best but no-one seems to be able to give me balanced advice.

Is the rain a dealbreaker? Has anyone here actually experienced that time of year there and have any thoughts?
