One of the largest ethnic minorities in Vietnam is the Hmong (Meo) tribe with more than 700.000 inhabitants. The origins of the non-Vietnamese minorities are far from clear, but scholars generally believe that some, like the Hmong, Dzao, Nung Giay, Lolo and others are descendants of ancient migrants from southern China who settled in the northern border regions (Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar)Looking at the color of the clothes they wear, you can identify them: White Hmong, Red Hmong, Green Hmong, Black Hmong.
In the region of Sapa, 390 km from Hanoi, live the Red Dzao and the Black Hmong. The local saturday market is the place to be. They sell what their familys do not need. Four km from Sapa is the Catcat village, a traditional Hmong village. They live in houses built on the ground, with three rooms, earten walls, or plank and bamboo walls. The Hmong families are patrilineal. Men and women of the same lineage are not allowed to get married. Boys and girls are free to choose their own partners.
