Food Spot: Restaurant Yi Xin Ge
Restaurant Yi Xin Ge has been in business for the longest time - far longer than I can remember. Its fame spreads throughout the country as friends who are living in the northern region have heard and eaten at this restaurant before.
Food is a marvelous thing. You cannot keep a good thing to yourself. Restaurant Yi Xin Ge specializes in Bak Kut Teh, the authentic ones that come complete with herbal soup and thick slabs of pork floating in it. There are also choices of yar char kwai (crullers), braised mushroom, tau fu pok (deep fried tofu skin), and vegetables on the side. The soup is clear and not too overpowering with herbs as would be the case for some other restaurants.
You can get a claypot of bak kut teh for an individual for less than RM10. Add a few more ringgit for two people. The other side dishes such as vegetables, braised mushroom, or tau fu pok are all around RM5 to RM10, size dependent. There are a good variety to choose from.
Although the restaurant is not air-conditioned, yet it is fairly cooling with many fans located at strategic spots. While bak kut teh is their specialty, yet we noticed a trend after a while. After the meal, many customers remained seated at their tables for many long minutes, sipping tea from tiny china cups and delicate pots. Almost every table is filled with these teapots. Individually served with each person to a pot, these gourmet Chinese teas is also the restaurant’s unique selling point. Regulars to the restaurant enjoy a smoke after their meal while slowly sipping their tea. There is also a kettle boiling in a corner for those who wish to add hot water to their teapot. It is all self-service. If you are interested in trying out some gourmet Chinese tea, this could be the place for you.
