Cycle of the Season
The Shepherd Lodge |
|
The major profession of the Kaghani people (in Pakistan) is farming, agriculture and having large herds of sheep. The shepherds in local language (Hindku) are called Bakarwal. The Bakarwal have large herds of sheep, goats and some ponies and bakarwal dogs for security.
The Bakarwal travel with seasons, in winter they stay near plains but as spring season starts; they start their journey to uphill pastures where they stay for more than four/five months. There they build temporary hut with crude stones and logs.
This picture was taken at the Sari & Paya pasture in Kaghan valley in the month of October so all Bakarwals had left with their flocks and this lodge was deserted. It would be buried under heavy snow during December and whole pasture will remain under tons of snow till next summer.
