Description:
This very lovely restored Tang dynasty temple is located in the NW outskirts of Kunming, and is known as the first Zen Buddhist temple in SW China. There are shrines to visit and altars towards which to pray. But what makes the temple a must-visit are the strange statues created in the late 19th century by a master sculptor from Sichuan. The statues are lifelike - perhaps too lifelike for some tastes, figures caught in mid-grimace, monks, gods and monsters. Well worth the visit, though the management requests that you not photograph the idols.
