It's a lovely day for the ferry ride across the sparkling bay tothe island of Sakura. ThereI join up with a Japanese group for a two-hour tour of the volcano Sakurajima. ??
We make stops at the visitors' center, a shrine and a lookoutpoint. Climbing the mountain is prohibited but we do get close to the smoke and ash. Our eyes absorb a speck or two.
And when the wind blows the ash in the right direction, the folks in Kagoshima (pop 460,600) open their umbrellas.
