Beautiful lacquered paper umbrellas called kasa are a present-day reminder of the grace and elegance of Japan's bygone courtly era, known as ukiyo-e, the floating world.

Although Tokyo is a high-tech metropolis among the world's most modern, old-world adornments like these softly-lit paper lanterns are as much a part of the city as its glass-and-steel skyscrapers.
