Ba Dinh is best known by tourists as the resting place of Uncle Ho in the Mausoleum, yet a short stroll away from this complex reveals a vibrant Vietnamese community.

Pho Doi Can is a busy street, where basket ladies wearing conical hats sell fruit and flowers, where old men wearing round, green Vietcong style hats rest in their old and rusting cyclos, and where everyday life of the locals takes place in their homes come store fronts. Well worth a wander beyond where most tourists go to experience a taste of real Hanoi life.
